Jewish Assimilation in America: Female Characters of Yekl

Abstract
In the first part of the twentieth century, the United States of America received a massive influx of immigrant from Eastern Europe, who were mostly Jews and ended up living in the lower east side of New York City. Abraham Cahan is one of the many voices, who wrote about the struggle of newly arrived Jews in America. This article deals with two major female characters, from Cahan’s Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto, tumultuous assimilation process in America; and argue Yekl provides a sneak peek of the whole process many Jews, especially women, has gone through in America.
